A Formulation of the Log-Logistic Distribution for Fading Channel Modeling

    Get PDF
In some scenarios, the log-logistic (LL) distribution is shown to provide the best fit to field measurements in the context of wireless channel modeling. However, a fading channel model based on the LL distribution has not been formulated yet. In this work, we introduce the L-distribution as a reformulation of the LL distribution for channel modeling purposes. We provide closed-form expressions for its PDF, CDF, and moments. Performance analysis of wireless communication systems operating under L-fading channels is exemplified, providing exact and asymptotic expressions for relevant metrics such as the outage probability and the average capacity. Finally, important practical aspects related to the use of the L-distribution for channel fitting purposes are discussed in two contexts: (i) millimeter-wave links with misaligned gain, and (ii) air–ground channels in unmanned aerial vehicle communications.European Social and Regional FundsJunta de Andalucia P18-RT-3175 UMA20-FEDERJA-002Universidad de MalagaUniversidad de Granad

We prove that if T is large enough, there exists a solution as a global minimizer of the corresponding action functional. In the subsonic case, we can use variational methods to prove the existence of a mountain-pass solution. Moreover, we show that for small T the problem admits only constant solutions.FEDER-MINECO Grant PGC2018-096422-B-I00Andalucia (FQM-116)Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN), through the IMAG-Maria de Maeztu Excellence Grant CEX2020-001105-M/AEI/10.13039/50110001103

Complementary music therapy for cancer patients in at-home palliative care and their caregivers: protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial

    Get PDF
Background Patients with advanced cancer, receiving at-home palliative care, are subject to numerous symptoms that are changeable and often require attention, a stressful situation that also impacts on the family caregiver. It has been suggested that music therapy may benefit both the patient and the caregiver. We propose a study to analyse the efficacy and cost utility of a music intervention programme, applied as complementary therapy, for cancer patients in palliative care and for their at-home caregivers, compared to usual treatment. Method A randomised, double-blind, multicentre clinical trial will be performed in cancer patients in at-home palliative care and their family caregivers. The study population will include two samples of 40 patients and two samples of 41 caregivers. Participants will be randomly assigned either to the intervention group or to the control group. The intervention group will receive a seven-day programme including music sessions, while the control group will receive seven sessions of (spoken word) therapeutic education. In this study, the primary outcome measure is the assessment of patients' symptoms, according to the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System, and of the overload experienced by family caregivers, measured by the Caregiver Strain Index. The secondary outcomes considered will be the participants' health-related quality of life, their satisfaction with the intervention, and an economic valuation. Discussion This study is expected to enhance our understanding of the efficacy and cost-utility of music therapy for cancer patients in palliative care and for their family caregivers. The results of this project are expected to be applicable and transferrable to usual clinical practice for patients in home palliative care and for their caregivers. The approach described can be incorporated as an additional therapeutic resource within comprehensive palliative care. To our knowledge, no previous high quality studies, based on a double-blind clinical trial, have been undertaken to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of music therapy. The cost-effectiveness of the project will provide information to support decision making, thereby improving the management of health resources and their use within the health system

Anti-piracy policy and quality differential in markets for information goods

In this paper we analyze the strategic decisions of the government, the incumbent and the pirate in a market where the good is piratable. We show that deterred or accommodated piracy can occur in equilibrium, but pure monopoly cannot occur for any anti-piracy policy. We also show that the initial quality differential between the original and the pirated product is essential to explain the effects of an increase in the quality of pirated product on both the level of piracy and the optimal monitoring rate. Assuming a one-stage entry process and a sufficiently high quality differential, we prove that the incumbent always prefers to move first and make a credible commitment to a price. However, this is not true with a two-stage entry process.for-profit piracy, quality, monitoring, price competition.

Al comparar los resultados obtenidos, se encontró que los asfaltenos eran responsables de las características estructurales y de consistencia del vehículo, mientras las resinas le proporcionan propiedades aglutinantes y los aceites malténicos actúan como disolventesThe bituminous crude from the Machete/ Venezuela/ area/ which has such a fluid consistency thatitfalls outside the normalscope of the A5TM o-s (1) penetration tes~ exceeding the 3D-mm ceiling specified in that standar~ and can be used as an asphaltprimer: Like other asphaltproducts/ these materials are -chemically speaking- a mix ofnumerous naphtheni~ paraffinic and aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyc/ic compounds containing sulphur, nitrogen/ oxygen and so on. They have a dense and a malthene Ol'l phase which/ along with the natural hydrocarbons additives usedin these products/ acts as a volatile fluidizer: The former is described as a mix of asphaltenes: comple~ high mo/ecular weight substances that are insolub/e in paraffinichydrocarbons andsoluble in aromatic compounds such as benzene. The malthene oilphase/ in turn/ consists in a mix of resins and hydrocarbons and together the two constitute a colloida/system. The experiments discussedin thepresentpaper were conducted to determine the effect of the proportion of asphaltenes and resin oils on the viscosity ofsuch bituminous crude emulsions/ with a view to their use as primers. These experiments were run in a Parr batch reactor in a nitrogen atmosphere using n-heptane as a solvent. The resins were separated after the asphaltenes precipitated from the samples and subsequently from the malthene fraction obtained. The results showed that the asphaltenes account for the structural characteristics and consistency ofthe medium and the resin oils for its cohesive properties/ the malthene oils act as solvent

This paper sets out to interpret the profound meaning that the reception of the Garcilaso's poetry adopts in such an important zone of the Spanish Golden Age literature as the religious one, where it was object of numerous attempts of rewriting from spiritual assumptions, making suitable for a Christian sense. In this work the known versions «a lo divino» of Garcilaso's lyric are reviewed, and at the same time the «corpus» of its «contrafacta» gets rich with new examples discovered in very diverse documentary sources

Pedestrian-Vehicle Accidents Reconstruction with PC-Crash®: Sensibility Analysis of Factors Variation

[EN] This paper describes the main findings of a study performed by INSIA-UPM about the improvement of the reconstruction process of real world vehicle-pedestrian accidents using PC-Crash® software, aimed to develop a software tool for the estimation of the variability of the collision speed due to the lack of real values of some parameters required during the reconstruction task. The methodology has been based on a sensibility analysis of the factors variation. A total of 9 factors have been analyzed with the objective of identifying which ones were significant. Four of them (pedestrian height, collision angle, hood height and pedestrian-road friction coefficient) were significant and were included in a full factorial experiment with the collision speed as an additional factor in order to obtain a regression model with up to third level interactions. Two different factorial experiments with the same structure have been performed because of pedestrian gender differences. The tool has been created as a collision speed predictor based on the regression models obtained, using the 4 significant factors and the projection distance measured or estimated in the accident site. The tool has been used on the analysis of real-world reconstructed accidents occurred in the city of Madrid (Spain). The results have been adequate in most cases with less than 10% of deviation between the predicted speed and the one estimated in the reconstructions.Martínez Gala, F.; Páez, J.; Furones, A.; Sánchez, S.
